A Year in the Life – Day 105

Day 105
Prompt: Is it ever okay to lie

Hi Nigel

‘Hiya! I so want to say it is never okay to lie’

So why don’t you?

‘We all lie sometimes, that’s why’

I guess we do

‘Well, in your case, you make a career out of it and write fiction’

Haha! I suppose that is true too, but is that really falling into the definition of lying

‘Show me foxes that actually wear high fashion and talk – we both know that is not true and is, therefore, a lie’

Yes, but it is storytelling and never meant to be factual. AND who says foxes and other animals cannot communicate with each other.

‘I don’t understand what they say’

You don’t understand what a French man says so that’s hardly demonstrative of an inability to communicate, is it?

‘Yeah, okay’

Besides, if we say fiction is lying, and therefore unacceptable guess who is going to go puff into non-existence

‘Good point – I’m not going puff yet’

I think we should take fiction out of the equation

‘Yes, but still we all lie sometimes’

I think so

‘But they are lies that are not meant to hurt anyone, quite the opposite’

Little white lies, but are they really, okay?

‘They may not be okay, but sometimes they are necessary, I think’

Normally it involves answering questions such as ‘does my bum look big in this?’

‘Exactly’

Seriously, answering things like that wrong and you end up getting a hell of a slap

‘That sounds like the vocals of experience’

Yeahp

‘Ouch! So it can be white lies to protect self as well’

Yes, definitely

‘So white lies should be okay if they stop someone, including ourselves, from being hurt’

I think we have to accept they have to be allowable

‘Whereas lies that are intent on misleading and ultimately causing harm are wrong, no ifs and no buts, unless its big butts in jeans’

Haha! I think that nails it quite nicely. See you tomorrow, Nige
