Clothes Chapter X by Khalil Gibran

Khalil Gibran 1883-1931

Clothes Chapter X
1923

And the weaver said, “Speak to us of Clothes.”

And he answered:

Your clothes conceal much of your beauty, yet they hide not the unbeautiful.

And though you seek in garments the freedom of privacy you may find in them a harness and a chain.

Would that you could meet the sun and the wind with more of your skin and less of your raiment,

For the breath of life is in the sunlight and the hand of life is in the wind.

Some of you say, “It is the north wind who has woven the clothes to wear.”

But shame was his loom, and the softening of the sinews was his thread.

And when his work was done he laughed in the forest.

Forget not that modesty is for a shield against the eye of the unclean.

And when the unclean shall be no more, what were modesty but a fetter and a fouling of the mind?

And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair

Embers and Ashes (Hobbit Hole Witterings)

Embers and Ashes
Prompt: Nine lines

In the chaos, it’s falling apart
Disorder taking its toll
Heartfelt decisions scattering
Among the shards of the day
And tears steam in the flames
Hissing into the ashes
But from the embers and ashes
The spark of thinking returns
Let the night fall; for tomorrow is a new day

A Year in the Life – Day 108

Day 108
Prompt: Your first kiss

Hi Nigel,

‘Hiya! Was a big mistake’

That sounds very much like having the benefit of hindsight

Well, yes.’

So at the time was it such a mistake?

‘I guess not, I was crazy in love with the guy’

Crazy in love with the guy or with being in love

‘Haha! Most definitely the latter.’

Oh the wonderous joys of young love

‘Sweet innocence is not the most helpful thing, is it?’

When it comes to love, no it is not

‘So where did this life-changing snog happen

‘The height of sweet romance you mean?’

Yes, the grand passionate kiss

On the way home from a pub, after I had agreed to meet him for a date the following weekend’

So you were crazy in love and fuelled by alcohol

‘Recipe for disaster, right?’

Yeahp

‘I wouldn’t call it a snog but more than a peck’

So a wee bit of promise offered – I have heard worse?’

Oh, yeah, what promise, he stood me up the following weekend’

Oh no

‘I was gutted – after a week of building up a nothing kiss into the promised land’

I think we all have that t-shirt, mate

‘So herself wasn’t your first then’

No, I had a few mistakes beforehand and a couple after

‘Phew! I now feel normal, well, ish’

Precious few of us end up with the first love or first kiss

‘But the whole love and romance thing is such a big deal when you are young’

Puberty at its best

‘But the mistakes we make leave us jaded and cynical’

Perhaps, or perhaps, they teach us the things that won’t work for us in a relationship

‘If only there was a better way to learn’

We can’t avoid a broken heart, mate. See you tomorrow, Nige

Adventure (Weekend Writing Prompt)

Inspired by and written for Weekend Writing Prompt – Thank you, Sammi

Form: Free Verse

Taking chances amid the unknown
Of living and life
Where courageous breaths
Explode with hedonistic adrenalin
Seeking the high moments
Leaving the instincts of panic
With leaps into dark places
Both feet jump into the depths of exhilaration
For fortune embraces the brave
Who embrace their fear firmly
Before tucking it neatly into the inside pocket
Keeping it close to the heart
Tentative steps that seem confident
As uncertainty steps up to the challenge
Of self-discovery
