Tramp Stamp 777LLY by Larry Eberhart

I don’t know why my daddy named his car.
He named it Lilly, and my mom don’t care.
He says she’s has a soft top that he fancies
and that she’s got a tramp-stamp right back there,
and she’s his ride and carries his guitar.
To name her after mom would be too chancy;
she’s square, demure and won’t attract a copper
and her tramp-stamp just doesn’t go with Nancy.
“She let’s the dog ride with us to the bar,
she’ll haul things when your mommy plays the shopper
but she dissuades my mom-in-law with charm.”
Of all the things she does, well that’s the topper.
She’s sassy, gutsy, willing to go far,
his Lilly’s cute yet causes no alarm

Thrifty Beginnings

Inspired by and written for Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – thank you GC and Sue

Wow, this is a bit of trip back to my late twenties and thirties. Back then I was very much in the closet and doing what I did in private. I learned pretty quickly buying new stuff was a waste of money as within a week or two it would be in a charity shop as I purged myself of anything male. Charity shops became my lifeline in those early days.

Thrifty Beginnings
Form: Free Verse

A grey suit and pale grey shirt
sat on the cash desk
beneath a blue frock
and a black pencil skirt
that first time
my guts churning with fear
she didn’t blink behind her round glasses
not a strange look
not a knowing stare
and I handed her a tenner
before stepping out in the rain
did she notice they came back
in a charity sack just a few weeks later
did she notice me buying chinos and shirts
without a frock and with no skirt
did she notice they took longer to come back
did she know
did she have a clue
not a word did she say
when I asked to try a suit on
he even helped me find a matching tie
perhaps she knew
as I paid the money
this time there would be no charity sack
but several
full of dresses
and Laura Ashley prints
pretty tops with delicate lace
and never worn stiletto shoes
did twinkling blue eyes
behind round glasses know
a man found his style in her charity shop

Down Behind the Dustbin by Michael Rosen

Down Behind the Dustbin

Down behind the dustbin
I met a dog called Ted.
‘Leave me alone,’ he says,
‘I’m just going to bed.’

Down behind the dustbin
I met a dog called Roger.
‘Do you own this bin?’ I said.
‘No. I’m only a lodger.’

Down behind the dustbin
I met a dog called Sue.
‘What are you doing here?’ I said.
‘I’ve got nothing else to do.’

Down behind the dustbin
I met a dog called Jim.
He didn’t know me
And I didn’t know him.

Down behind the dustbin
I met a dog called Sid.
He said he didn’t know me
But I’m pretty sure he did.

Take It Slow

Take It Slow
Form: Raven’s Rovi Sonnet 47

In that first avoidance of meeting eyes
In sudden silence, love begins to speak
A hundred unshed tears wear no disguise
Initial emotions still tinged by fear
As the startled heart pulsates in the chest
Prospective love takes hold to draw us near
This party-crasher is an uninvited guest
New desires, new lusts of freshness to seek
As this, a yawning dawn of new love wakes
In coy shyness senses doing their best
Before love can spark the attraction tries
To bury the past so the heart is clear
Of all that clutter a lost-love’s hurt makes
All the while the mind is hitting the brakes

PoeticThursday . . . And now after everything:

Purplerays

*

*

And now
after everything:
I know this:
There is a reason
I am here.
And that reason
is bigger than me.
So I will carry on
with great faith
beyond what I can see.
In pursuit of bold courage,
on the adventure
of the journey ..
