A Desolation by Allen Ginsberg

A Desolation

Now mind is clear
as a cloudless sky.
Time then to make a
home in wilderness.

What have I done but
wander with my eyes
in the trees? So I
will build: wife,
family, and seek
for neighbors.

Or I
perish of lonesomeness
or want of food or
lightning or the bear
(must tame the hart
and wear the bear).

And maybe make an image
of my wandering, a little
image—shrine by the
roadside to signify
to traveler that I live
here in the wilderness
awake and at home

Hidden in the density of trees
The secret plans of escape
While humans lurch from scrape to scrape
As the world falls to its knees
And into chaos living must descend
And the time is coming when we will go
Or stay and meet the face of death
A simple choice, still some will say no
And stay until the bitter end
But me I’m gonna take that flight
To see a new world in another place
Born for peace before time stands still
A brighter future born of grace
For me the time has come, the time is right

I Come from There by Mahmoud Darwish

I Come from There

I come from there and I have memories
Born as mortals are, I have a mother
And a house with many windows,
I have brothers, friends,
And a prison cell with a cold window.
Mine is the wave, snatched by sea-gulls,
I have my own view,
And an extra blade of grass.
Mine is the moon at the far edge of the words,
And the bounty of birds,
And the immortal olive tree.
I walked this land before the swords
Turned its living body into a laden table.

I come from there. I render the sky unto her mother
When the sky weeps for her mother.
And I weep to make myself known
To a returning cloud.
I learnt all the words worthy of the court of blood
So that I could break the rule.
I learnt all the words and broke them up
To make a single word: Homeland…..

San Sebastiano by Leon Battista Alberti

San Sebastiano
1460-79
Architecture
Mantua, Italy

Less ornate than his earlier work, Alberti’s design for the façade for the church San Sebastiano displays many of the characteristics of his style such as decorative columns, a structural symmetry, and rounded arches above the doorways that are repeated at the structure’s pediment. While the façade of the church is its most striking feature Alberti’s remaining plans were never implemented. Work on the project slowed over the course of several years and Alberti died before it was finished.

When tears were falling from my eyes
And words of love just didn’t care
You were there to hear my heart’s cries
Listening to my confused fears
While I fought those battles within
me, old wars of what might have been
But you stayed and brushed up my tears
Stood beside me as I grew weak
My world ending, falling apart
I knew your love was mine to seek
In my darkness you took my hand
When none could be bothered to care
Your love was there for me to share
My soul, only you understand

Lost in the last strains of
the intensity of sound
and the intimacy of Bach
on the moonlit air
yet suddenly aware
his eyes are playing the music in mine
a perfect rendition
of a long-forgotten love song
lost in the wonder
of his beauty reflected by moonlight
opening the secrets of love
I am bound in his unbreakable creation
and the loveliness of his lips
that kiss with kiss of an angel

For me, it is the comments and the conversations that can be had in comments that make blogging a more refined social media space. So naturally, I think it is important to respond to someone’s comment and of course, it is simply common courtesy and good manners.

Now, what is classed as a response? Can it just be clicking the like button if one feels they have nothing to add to the thread of conversation? I’d say absolutely, yes it can be. The like button comes in handy for letting someone know you have seen their post or comment but maybe are not in a place to answer. I have the WordPress app on my phone which comes into its own when I am away from home but if I am away from home, most likely with my mum, I am not always able to type answers.

I think I have said it before, WordPress has a lovely community aspect to it, unlike the regular forms of social media there doesn’t seem to be nasty social politics going on. Possibly because we all read things that interest us on WordPress so immediately there is some common ground. Perhaps that is it, I don’t know.

Jim by Hilaire Belloc

Jim
1907

Who ran away from his Nurse and was eaten by a Lion

There was a Boy whose name was Jim;
His Friends were very good to him.
They gave him Tea, and Cakes, and Jam,
And slices of delicious Ham,
And Chocolate with pink inside
And little Tricycles to ride,
And read him Stories through and through,
And even took him to the Zoo–
But there it was the dreadful Fate
Befell him, which I now relate.

You know–or at least you ought to know,
For I have often told you so–
That Children never are allowed
To leave their Nurses in a Crowd;
Now this was Jim’s especial Foible,
He ran away when he was able,
And on this inauspicious day
He slipped his hand and ran away!

He hadn’t gone a yard when–Bang!
With open Jaws, a lion sprang,
And hungrily began to eat
The Boy: beginning at his feet.
Now, just imagine how it feels
When first your toes and then your heels,
And then by gradual degrees,
Your shins and ankles, calves and knees,
Are slowly eaten, bit by bit.
No wonder Jim detested it!
No wonder that he shouted “Hi!”

The Honest Keeper heard his cry,
Though very fat he almost ran
To help the little gentleman.“Ponto!” he ordered as he came
(For Ponto was the Lion’s name),
“Let go, Sir! Down, Sir! Put it down!”
The Lion made a sudden stop,
He let the Dainty Morsel drop,
And slunk reluctant to his Cage,
Snarling with Disappointed Rage.
But when he bent him over Jim,
The Honest Keeper’s Eyes were dim.
The Lion having reached his Head,
The Miserable Boy was dead!

When Nurse informed his Parents, they
Were more Concerned than I can say:–
His Mother, as She dried her eyes,
Said, “Well–it gives me no surprise,
He would not do as he was told!”
His Father, who was self-controlled,
Bade all the children round attend
To James’s miserable end,
And always keep a-hold of Nurse
For fear of finding something worse

Heart and Mind
Form: Common Measure

Rose-hued eyes see a pretty face
To dream of while asleep
Before the heart learns to see true
That beauty is skin deep
Until then dreams can rule the head
This love the heart will keep
For realization comes slow
That beauty is skin deep
In time pretty begins to show
As pain makes the soul weep
As inner ugly is revealed
And beauty is skin deep

Sunday Sonnet: With how sad steps by Sir Philip Sidney

Sir Philip Sidney 1554-1586

With how sad steps, O Moon, thou climbest the skies;
How silently, and with how wan a face!
What, may it be that even in heavenly place
That busy archer his sharp bow tries?
Sure, if that long-with-love-acquainted eyes
Can judge of love, thou feelest a lover’s case;
I read it in thy looks; thy languished grace
To me that feel the like thy state decries.
The even of fellowship, O Moon, tell me:
Is constant love deemed there but want of wit?
Are beauties there as proud as here they be?
Do they above love to be loved, and yet
Those lovers scorn whom that love doth possess?
Do they call virtue there ungratefulness?

Crystals- Orange Calcite

The next crystal out of my bag is the Orange Calcite. It is a rock-forming mineral found in various countries. With properties most often associated with higher consciousness.

Orange Calcite

Orange Calcite is orange in colour and is used for both energizing and cleansing. It is also known as Calcspar.

It is particularly good for the Sacral and Solar Plexus chakras. Both these chakras are involved with our feelings of belonging in our bit of the world, our connection with other people and the planet, and our creativity. It is an excellent crystal for balancing emotions and releasing feelings of fear and anxiety.

Orange Calcite is used when trying to unlock creative or sexual energies and is one of the few stones that help circulate those energies around the body. And removing any blockages when needed.

Affirmation: I allow my creativity to feed my soul.

You are here
and I am not running away
instead
I answer you with my tears
each one trailing down my cheek
as if afraid of the emotions
unsure of the shadows you cast on my skin
as uncertainty and doubt mingle with desire
unsaid words moisten
as your lips linger on the tear trails
a moment too long
but not long enough
and I inhale the scent of your skin
sweet like honeysuckle
enticing a bee to taste nectar
just enough temptation
to linger through until the next time
you are here again

Making It Real

Making It Real
Flash Fiction

Alex considered himself a normal 19-year-old guy. He loved bikes and working on bikes. In the garden sat his pet projects two bike frames surrounded by their components. His pride and joy, a 650cc Suzuki was in the drive, looking its age and rather beaten up.

Alex gazed out his bedroom window longingly at the machines. He should be out there, fixing and tweaking engines or taking his Suze for a ride in the sunshine. “No hope of that,” he muttered returning to his revision notes and the nagging screen of his monitor.

With mid-terms rapidly approaching Alex had to revise history. He hated history but he needed a decent grade to get into uni. Most of all he wanted to make his dad proud. He figured he owed him that much. His dad was hero and had made sure he and his brother, Max, had a stable upbringing after his mum had died of cancer when Alex and Max were small.

Impatiently Alex read about the battles and dates of WW1 trying to memorize some trigger points likely to come up in the exams. He didn’t hear his dad come in with two mugs of coffee. “How’s it going, Lex?”

His dark eyes looked at his dad, “I don’t think I can do this, Dad”

“Just do your best,” said his dad looking at the screen before quietly leaving the room.

Later his dad yelled from downstairs “Alex, there is someone here to see you”

Alex groaned in frustration and lopped downstairs to find his grandparents armed with photo albums waiting for him. “I don’t need this,” he thought.

“I understand you are studying the Somme,” his grandfather said.

“Trying to, gramps,” he replied, hoping it didn’t sound too sarky.

“Then this might just help you,” said his grandfather, placing an old album of photos in his hand. “My dad made this album when he was in the army, and this is his diary.”

Alex flicked his eyes over a few pages of the diary. Suddenly the Battle of the Somme was personal and real. “Gramps, he was there”

A few months later, a battered Suzuki was parked in the quad of a hall of residence. Inside, on the third floor, Alex was unpacking himself into his new room, ready to start his university career.

Twilight Hours

A Garret Poet

Twilight Hours
Form: Spenserian Sonnet

While walking home along an empty street
The thoughts of you are flooding through my mind
As twilight hours in amber softly greet
My dreams of love that I have come to find.
As night begins to fall and stress unwind
You seem a million miles away; yet near,
So, close my senses tingle as defined
By love behind the fence, I built in fear.
And as I walk, I shed another tear
For distance keeps you far away from me
If only destiny would make love clear
And turn my prudence so my eyes can see
The love I long to hold within my arms
To fill these empty streets I walk with love's sweet charms

A Shipwreck in Stormy Seas by Claude-Joseph Vernet, 1773. Oil on canvas. National Gallery, London, UK

Cacophony of Discord
Form: Dechnad Cummaisc

The night assaults all the senses
Crashing sublime
As beauty and terror collide
Waves ride and climb
Horror of tempestuous sea
Foreboding night
Elements dictating our fate
A date with fright
Sweeping clouds into the darkness
Of breaking ships
Of defeated broken remains
Wind strains and whips
The beams of light let them all down
Frantic scrambles
In the lost echoes of discord
Towards shambles
Towards boulders along the shore
Lightning strikes shocks
Storm’s aftermath revealed at dawn
Death on the rocks

Pieta by Titian

Pieta by Titian

Pieta
1575-76
High Renaissance
Oil on canvas
Gallerie dell’ Accademia, Venice, Italy

One of the last paintings by Titian “Pieta” was created to hang over his grave and depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Christ. She is accompanied by Nicodemus and Mary Magdalene. It is believed that Nicodemus is a self-portrait and that Titian is viewing his own imminent death in Christ and touching his body in the hope of eternal salvation. Unfinished at Titian’s death the painting was completed by Palma il Giovane.

“Pieta” is darkly atmospheric, a possible indication of Titian’s fear of death. It is lit by shafts of moonlight and a putto carrying a torch. This allows the artist to use bold chiaroscuro, with the light illuminating the image of a pelican, symbolic of the Passion of Christ and redemption. In the right-hand corner, there is a small picture within the picture of Titian and his son Orazio in prayer, possibly asking to be spared from the plague ravaging Venice at the time and eventually killing both of them. Statues of Sybil and Moses flank the image and seemingly overwhelm the depiction of the mourners and indicate the frailty of life.

Titian 1490-1576
