Love and Beans

Love and Beans
Form: Raven’s Rovi Sonnet 63

At the back of the shelf a can of beans
Comfort waiting for when I need it most
Low sugar sauce for the sake of my jeans
I hear you laugh and saying I’m a nut
Because you’re always here to hold me tight
Yes, I hear you, and that chastising tut
And, darling, I suppose you are right
But it’s in this knowing there comes a but
Of what to do on that cold lonely night
I make me a supper of beans on toast
To lift my mood with the extra proteins
And I’m touched your presence is always here
Because I have no doubts, you’re with me, dear
That is our lovers’ truth I still hold near

Hail to the Pure by Ivan Albright

Hail to the Pure by Ivan Albright

Hail to the Pure
1977
Lithograph
Lithograph on white wove paper
The Art Institute of Chicago, USA

Albright began experimenting with lithographs later in life when his vision was badly deteriorating. Diagnosed clinically blind he underwent surgery in 1977 which restored his vision. “Hail to the Pure” was gifted to the surgeon who performed the operation. In the lithograph, Albright depicts a girl who wears a crown and a flower in her hair. The image is uncharacteristic of Albright’s oeuvre probably because it was intended as a gift.

Upbeat (RDP)

Inspired by and written for Ragtag Daily Prompt – my thanks to Tracy

Definition: Upbeat – adj. cheerful; optimistic.

Form: Minute Poetry

spirits rising a cheery smile
with life worthwhile
the outlook’s good
trees in the wood
bold and brassy but still with class
new blades of grass
reach for the sun
the wood undun
and birds are singing April’s song
now days are long
down in the wood
where all is good

I’m Not Leaving (NaPoMo 15)

I’m Not Leaving
Form: Epistle Sonnet 15 – aba adcbe cdcd ee
Theme: Love Subject: Chair

Our love made us strong through the best and worst
And we had generous helpings of both
Yet anger and sorrow always dispersed
Because our love, the us, always came first
Words of rage in my memory are rare
Times of joy mellowed in contented bliss
As in each other, we found our own growth
As in the ways of love our souls confide
A destiny revealed from the first kiss
To the last wanderings with your wheelchair
You told me to go, give this last a miss
I said no, for you I’ll always be there
With you, my love, I belong by your side
Together, forever; that’s still our ride

NaPoMo Classic Poetry Day 15 – From Father to Son by Emyr Humphreys

Emyr Humphreys 1919-2020

From Father to Son

There is no limit to the number of times
Your father can come to life, and he is as tender as ever he was
And as poor, his overcoat buttoned to the throat,
His face blue from the wind always blows in the outer darkness
He comes towards you, hesitant,
Unwilling to intrude and yet driven at the point of love
To this encounter.

You may think
That love is all that is left of him, but when he comes
He comes with all his winters and all his wounds.
He stands shivering in the empty street,
Cold and worn like a tramp at the end of a journey
And yet a shape of unquestioning love that you
Uneasy and hesitant of the cold touch of death
Must embrace.

Then, before you can touch him
he is gone, leaving on your fingers
A little more of his weariness
A little more of his love
