Has My Heart Gone to Sleep? by Antonio Machado

Antonio Machado 1875-1939

Has My Heart Gone to Sleep?

Has my heart gone to sleep?
Have the beehives of my dreams
stopped working, the waterwheel
of the mind run dry,
scoops turning empty,
only shadow inside?

No, my heart is not asleep.
It is awake, wide awake.
Not asleep, not dreaming—
its eyes are opened wide
watching distant signals, listening
on the rim of vast silence

Chasing the Dreams

Chasing the Dreams
Form: Rime Royal

I still remember all those days with you
And I still feel the wonder of the nights
With all love’s beauty our own special view
As each night we spent on fanciful flights
Chasing the dreams of each other’s delights
We had known each other so very long
From the first date, our feelings were so strong

But now I’m alone there is only cloud
And a confused world cannot understand
How life now feels like a grey empty shroud
How I wish we could walk along the strand
And I question how cruel Fate had it planned
From nights of passion where love took its hold
My bed tonight again feels icy cold

A Year in the Life – Day 88

Day 88
Prompt: What inanimate object would be the most annoying if it played loud upbeat music while being used?

Hi Nigel,

‘Hiya! A fun prompt, cool’

So go for it, enjoy yourself

‘It has to be the ATM’

Haha! That would be infuriating, I agree.

‘Only people who would want that are those intent on stealing what money you take out’

Exactly, nothing like making it obvious, and some hang around cash machines with bad intent

‘It seems an obvious target to be honest’

Some thieves have gotten a bit more sophisticated and actually fit scanners into the ATM itself to steal the card details.

‘Indeed. I think, however unfair it may seem, one has to be cautious. I’m not sure I would use an ATM’

Most of them are safe and in very public places but I get what you are saying

‘Another thing that would be annoying is the self-service checkouts being loud and upbeat’

Being a naggy impatient bit of tech is annoying enough with those things

‘I know they irritate you’

They do indeed. It’s bad enough dealing with a naggy human but a bloody machine

‘They must be a nightmare for the older customer’

I’m not that old, and they do my head in, and frankly, if they start playing muzak, it would just make it worse

‘I’ve noticed you head for a proper checkout’

If I have one or two things, I will use self-service but if it is a full-on shop, no, just no way

‘Oh my god, that would be a nightmare’

Add to that self-service checkouts have led to higher levels of shoplifting

‘That was obviously going to happen’

And the scan-as-you-go thing didn’t help with that.

‘It makes you wonder why the stores even thought it was a good idea’

Probably because it reduces the wage cost as they don’t need as many checkout assistants

‘Better profits for the shareholders’

Is it though if they are losing stock to increased shoplifting?

Hah! Serves them right if they are’

But it isn’t fair on decent customers who then have to absorb the cost in higher prices

‘Ow, that is just mean’

I know. See you tomorrow, Nige

Streets (Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge)

Inspired by and written for Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – thank you Gerry and Sue

Form: Canzonetta 1

Across the stagnant row of blaring horns
Between the rain-reflected lights and shadows
He lies as feet rush by, the path is worn
He’s blanketed in a shroud of sorrows
And his vacated eyes stare out forlorn
No one stops as his head falls and bows
As from this world, his life is torn
Another victim has no tomorrows

A homeless soul that cannot speak
In a plight that steals and never borrows
And each day passes into a week
A month, a year of fears and sorrows
Another winter is reaching its peak
With social graves in many rows
But no one cries, no mourners shriek
Another victim has no tomorrows
