Sculpture

Yoshino-cho Park in Hirosaki, Japan

Nara’s White Dog has become among the artist’s most iconic images. The benign animals have been featured on T-shirts, stuffed toys, radios, and various novelty items. In ‘A to Z Memorial Dog’ the white dog takes the form of a massive sculpture with closed eyes and a pose that is suggestive of Buddhist meditation. The white colour also carries associations with the white-ghost spirit in Japanese culture.

Yoshitomo Nara 1959-

Yoshimoto Nara
Superflat, Pop Art, Ukiyo-e Japanese Woodblock Prints, Japonism
Born: 5 December 1959, Aomori, Japan
Nationality: Japanese

A central figure within contemporary Japanese art, Nara is associated with the rise of Superflat art; a term coined by Takashi Murakami to describe the art movement that blends a two-dimensional graphic design with the contemplative interests of fine art. Nara’s deceptively simple art uses cartoon-style imagery to express the conflict of childhood emotion and anxiety within a single figure. Nara’s children are typically shown in a mood of resistance and rebellion. The illustrative quality of his art, and also his nationality, has often associated Nara with traditional Japanese manga and anime but his work draws on a wider range of influences from Western Punk Rock and fairy tales to Eastern religions and philosophies

One Day

One Day
Form: Ivorian Sonnet 113

I wake up each morning with your sweet kiss
And listen to their chorus song of bliss

Be it summer sun or the winter’s ice
It’s time to leave you and face the new day
Your kiss lingers feeling so warm and nice

As I pull on a T-shirt and blue jeans
I’ll see you soon, love, in my sleeping dream
Not stopping to think of what might have beens
The past is something I cannot redeem

But tonight I’ll be there in lunar beam
‘I love you, babe’ the only words I say
In these days of living the in-betweens
Until I don’t have to think it like this
The day I awake in our Paradise

Flying Kite by JezzieG

For a while, I believed in you
In the blind way that lovers do
I gave you love you gave me pain
And left me crying in the rain
A blinded fool I let it go
When you told me you loved me so
My heartstrings reaching out with hope
Falsely thinking that I could cope

I let my spirits soar up high
Like a kite flying in the sky
Then like the wind you played around
Once again, I crashed to the ground
And there is no one to stop me
It’s time I stopped so I can see

this afternoon
I’m going down to Peru

A Year in the Life – Day 70

Day 70
Prompt: What are your thoughts on same-sex marriage

Hi Nigel, this one won’t be a surprise

‘Hiya! Haha! It is a tad obvious’

So say it then

‘I can’t see any logical reason why two consenting adults who are committed to each other, and love each other can’t celebrate that fact with a marriage’

I can’t disagree with you

‘Not unless you really want to be a total hypocrite

‘You do know Gabs and I were never official as it wouldn’t have been legally recognised in any way

‘Shit, that sucks’

We were hand fast but the law at the time said no you are not

‘But it would be legal now?’

Yes, and that wrangles me sometimes as she wanted that more than anything else and I couldn’t make it happen

‘Don’t be so harsh on yourself, mate, you gave her your all for eternity. Law or no law that will stand. I know it will.’

It will with me, that’s for sure

‘And with her too.’

I hope so

‘Don’t you ever doubt that.’

Sometimes it’s tough this side of the veil

‘I get that but trust me on this.’

Right.

‘Somethings are a matter of faith and trust in what you believe’

That’s true, okay

‘It still sucks that is how it was though’

To be fair it isn’t so long ago that being a gay person was a criminal offense – as if you could change your sexuality to fit a manmade dumbass ideal,

‘That’s just vile’

1967 so it’s in my living history. It only applied to men; being a gay woman was never illegal in the UK.

‘What?’

The reasoning behind that was even more offensive to women really. The argument was that women were feeble-minded and unbalanced any law would make them more likely to be gay. Like what the fuck?

‘Don’t tell me men made that shit up’

Well, yeah, we are talking about the early 20th century and the old fuddies of the government were men

‘And probably scared on hearing about lesbianism their wives would desert then for women. Seriously, the first chance I got I would leave a man who thought like that’

The fact is even back then the majority of people didn’t think like that, and if they did it was because they were told to. Hate and discrimination are learned behaviours

‘Indeed no one is born hating’

Exactly, see you tomorrow, Nige

A Year in the Life – Day 69

Day 69
No Prompt

Hi Nigel

‘Hiya! Yayyyy!’

So what do you want to talk about?

‘Nothing too intense or revealing after the last few days – is that okay?’

Yeah, that’s fine. A chilled convo with coffee and cake is cool

‘I thought you would say differently’

Why?

‘Isn’t the whole point of this to reveal me as a character?’

Yes, but I think we have to allow you to be human and take time off

‘That would be more realistic, I guess’

Yes. So do you have any plans for your day of freedom?

‘I haven’t got my walking boots with me so it won’t be walking’

Just as well its chucking it down outside

‘Yeah, long gone are the days of setting out in the rain’

Haha! I’m with you on that

‘Are we showing our age?’

Maybe, or just common sense, why get soaked through if we don’t have to

‘I would say especially in the winter, but being soaked in a summer shower is yucky too.’

Getting rain wet is just horrible.

‘But going for a walk just after rain is fun’

Wellies and puddles, huh?

‘What’s wrong with that?’

Nothing dude. I know a doggo who would agree with you, not that she has wellies

‘Oh no, and I bet the muddier the puddle the better’

I keep towels by the door for a reason, and if she is really muddy, she gets air lifted to the shower.

‘On your flooring that would be a nightmare. I must say I thought you were more practical than that’

I got the flooring before I got Lilydog

‘Ahh! And no way would you have got the flooring if you had her first.’

Haha! No, nor all the white bedding that I used to have. Got shot of that within a month of her arrival.

‘White is so clinical, why on earth would you want it anyway. Hang on, all your towels are white but Lilydog’s are blue’

In the case of bedding and towels, it is because they show the odd mark quickly so get cleaned quickly. I have a real thing about wet towels so it doesn’t make much odds as I change them all the time.

‘Batshit!!’

I know, see you tomorrow, Nige

Form: Busta Sonetto 2

When cards are dealt in fair play
Those in the hand are down to luck
Deuces or aces one must play the game
In the hope other players come unstuck
Should the hand fold or up the ante

A pair is good, a triple is better
And to have both is a full house
But to cheat is the act of a louse
Numbered corners or maybe a letter

Folding down when the odds aren’t enough
To reveal how the game plan runs
Another hand, is that an ace
Hold the nerve stick to the guns
The skill of the game is the bluff

Girl by Lisa Zaran

Girl

She said she collects pieces of sky,
cuts holes out of it with silver scissors,
bits of heaven she calls them.
Every day a bevy of birds flies rings
around her fingers, my chorus of wives,
she calls them. Every day she reads poetry
from dusty books she borrows from the library,
sitting in the park, she smiles at passing strangers,
yet can not seem to shake her own sad feelings.
She said that night reminds her of a cool hand
placed gently across her fevered brow, said
she likes to fall asleep beneath the stars,
that their streaks of light make her believe
that she too is going somewhere. Infinity,
she whispers as she closes her eyes,
descending into thin air, where no arms
outstretch to catch her

Seeking penance that’s spoken in scarlet

Such is their hunger to see what is known
A tomorrow that’s decked richly in gold
But the darker days must also be shown

The pretty come thinking they are the why
The ugly fear they’ve no future at all
But it is not always ugly that’ll die
For Death claims them all when he comes to call

They pay for the truth but never can cope
But still they come to find all that they hope

Prompt: What do your shoes say about you

Hi Nigel,

‘Hiya! Do shoes say anything?’

I don’t suppose they actually sit down and have a conversation with you.

‘I dread to think what they would say if they did’

Oi, your feet stink get some odour eaters

‘Haha! That would be my walking boots for sure’

So what do walking boots tell me about you

‘That I like bloody walking, sheesh’

What do my walking boots tell you about me

‘You like walking muddy tracks, or Lilydog does. Oh, I see what you are getting at.’

Okay.

‘Looking at my boots they have forest debris so say I have been walking in a forest.’

And didn’t clean your boots after

‘I wiped them with a cloth, since when do walking boots need to be shiny and polished’

Haha! Indeed

‘And my trainers say I prefer dressing casually’

Do you actually own dress shoes?

‘Do you?’

One pair yes. Walking boots or trainers would have been a bit naff at a funeral

:Yeah, I see your point. So you have a suit too?’

Yeahp. Worn it once same as the shoes

‘Haha! Not your style then’

No more than it is yours, mate

‘I don’t own a suit, but I suppose if the need arises, I will get one’

And a cover to store it in as it won’t come out of the wardrobe that often

‘And a bloody tie I suppose’

I think you’d get away without these days. A natty cravat would be more your style I think

‘At least you didn’t say bow tie’

Oh hell no, they are such a pain to tie, tried can’t be assed

‘Haha! I think you are right. A nice silk cravat would be kinda cool’

At least the question isn’t what does your tie say about you

‘Oh that would be easy – I like feeling like I am being garrotted’

Haha! See you tomorrow, Nige

Fable by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Fable
1846

The mountain and the squirrel
Had a quarrel,
And the former called the latter, “little prig”:
Bun replied,
You are doubtless very big,
But all sorts of things and weather
Must be taken in together
To make up a year,
And a sphere.
And I think it no disgrace
To occupy my place.
If I’m not so large as you,
You are not so small as I,
And not half so spry:
I’ll not deny you make
A very pretty squirrel track;
Talents differ; all is well and wisely put;
If I cannot carry forests on my back,
Neither can you crack a nut

A Year in the Life – Day 67

Day 67
Prompt: Racism

Hi Nigel,

‘Hiya! What the f…’

You don’t like the prompt?

‘I don’t like racism, more like’

That’s good

‘I don’t like any sort of bigotry.’

I’m glad about that

‘I know that. I really don’t get the narrow-minded thinking that makes people hate on others who aren’t the same as them. More’s the point I don’t want to get those people’

In all honesty, I wouldn’t be the right person to enlighten you, as I don’t get them either

‘So if I was Black, would you still write me?’

Of course, I would, and why would I not?

‘Just checking, don’t get narky’

I am not narky

‘So you have done outside the white English box then?’

Yes, Felipe and Esteban are of Spanish descent, and Gai and Kip well who knows where they are from but it isn’t the UK

‘How can you not know where they come from’

All I can say is their point of origin is a regimented somewhat fascist dictator state.

‘So Hitler and the Nazis’

No, but that terrible point in our history undoubtedly is one of the influences as are other dictatorships

‘So what actually inspired them coming into being sort of thing’

A picture of a bridge heavily covered in mist and their escape from their homeland is where my brain landed

‘Actually, that’s cool’

Why?

‘The way your brain leaps into something from a simple prompt it’s really amazing’

Nigel, I count my blessings when that happens, it isn’t as often as you think. For the most part, I have to work on what I can do with a prompt. And that can take one or many attempts.

‘Yeah, painting is like that’

I am sure it is. Our creative talent is only natural so far, we have to nurture it and allow it to grow

‘Yes, it’s like a little seed. See you tomorrow, writer’

Make no mistake; there will be no forgiveness;
No voice can harm you and no hand will save;
Fenced by the magic of deliberate darkness
You walk on the sharp edges of the wave;

Trouble with soul again the putrefaction
Where Lazarus three days rotten lies content.
Your human tears will be the seed of faction
Murder the sequel to your sacrament.

The City of God is built like other cities:
Judas negotiates the loans you float;
You will meet Caiaphas upon committees;
You will be glad of Pilate’s casting vote.

Your truest lovers still the foolish virgins,
Your heart will sicken at the marriage feasts
Knowing they watch you from the darkened gardens
Being polite to your official guests

Form: Quintilla 2

Just a little girl in the shop
Gazing up at a well-stocked shelf
Her eyes caught by colourful wealth
She catches daddy on the hop
His credit card yielding her crop

Tonight she’ll dream of tomorrow
Of being too grown up for toys
And she’ll attract all of the boys
Her tomorrow has no sorrow
The only time she can borrow

Now a young woman in the store
She’s catching the eyes of the men
Her sugar daddy waits again
With her blues eyes demanding more
His expense account hits the floor

Tonight they will all dream of her
Her pretty face and heaving bust
Enticing their dreams into lust
While sleeping it‘s all a blur
But she’s their own Venus in fur

The older woman browsing goods
A cougar; and she divorced well
And her toy boy says she’s a belle
Other men watch beneath their hoods
She’s not one for strolling the woods

Tonight she dreams of yesterday
Recalling the girl wanting sweets
Licking her fingers glazed with treats
Savouring the past far away
But sticky marks in her mind stay

A Year in the Life – Day 66

Day 66
Prompt: What decadent food do you like

Hi Nigel,

‘Hiya! It’s not rocket science today then’

I already know, the telltale signs of the Divine Chocolate cake are evident

‘Hmmhmm. But it is so delicious

With almost 3 large bars of dark chocolate in it I should hope so

‘So not good for the figure then’

Not at all, but it is a treat.

‘Damn, I could eat this all day.’

I think we have already answered your prompt then but you need a napkin to wipe the beard dude.

‘Can I add more to the list?’

If you want.

‘I do eat more than cake, not sure they are all decadent,’

Depends on how you take the word decadent. I’d say decadence is something you don’t have often but when you do it is the biz. It’s your idea of foodie pleasure.

‘Oh cool, well not cool, spicy and hot.’

Chili or curry?

‘Your chili is lush mate, but that curry last night was the biz’

That wasn’t a curry, that was karaage

‘It was chicken, sweet and spicy hot.’

Yes. And I’d agree it is a bit decadent

‘I think decadent means you need a napkin to wipe the beard after.’

Haha! The honey is a bit sticky for sure

‘But it makes it so sweet.’

That is what honey does, yes

‘Perhaps I should add honey to the list too’

I am sure the bees would appreciate your seeing honey as something special

‘I think Pooh would concur.

Have you been reading Milne,

‘I finished Wind in the Willows’

Nige, if you want to get more grown up with animal stories try Durrell

‘Okay, I will when I have finished Pooh.’

Okay, then. See you tomorrow

Hobbies (Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge)

Inspired by and written for Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – thank you Gerry and Sue

The quote is nailing it for me so I will include it as a Texte

Form: Busta Sonetto 1

Texte: “The art of bread making can become a consuming hobby, and no matter how often and how many kinds of bread one has made, there always seems to be something new to learn. – Julia Child

When living is stressing me out of my head
My feels broken and all out of ink
I need some fun to simply let go, relax
And the answer is there by my kitchen sink
With flour and yeast, it’s time I made bread

It may seem strange to see the daily loaf
As a pleasurable thing to do and make
But I’m learning cooking is not really a chore
And for me, there is so much joy to take
A really good way to take the strain off

When my pen has done, given up the ghost
My kitchen’s the place I go to most

Brorgidan

Brorgidan
Free Verse

Brorgidan born from the chalice of malice
To render hatred in bloody stormed skies
With his endless unsated passion
Garnered from humanity’s greed
While wandering among their covetous grins
Making bargains in their shifty hands
Such is Brorgidan delirium
In his own hedonistic nature
Creating and feeding only his own desire
While innocent glazed eyes offer
Coquette gazes at the temptation
Tormenting all hunger
With teasing salutations
Brorgidan’s thirsty tongue lingers
On the soft palates of gluttony
Clenching his teeth in raptures of envy
His gnarled fingers seeking the bitterness
From the throats of the lazy
Revealing their own pride
With the emotionless rage
Of apathetic anger
And then he will claim all human vanity
For Brorgidan is the demon
A reflection in the mirror
To steal the soul

Days by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803-1802

Days
1857

Daughters of Time, the hypocritic Days,
Muffled and dumb like barefoot dervishes,
And marching single in an endless file,
Bring diadems and fagots in their hands.
To each they offer gifts after his will,
Bread, kingdoms, stars, and sky that holds them all.
I, in my pleached garden, watched the pomp,
Forgot my morning wishes, hastily
Took a few herbs and apples, and the Day
Turned and departed silent. I, too late,
Under her solemn fillet saw the scorn

Born: 25 May 1803, Massachusetts, USA

A Year in the Life – Day 65

Day 65
Prompt: Do you have a love interest

Hi Nigel, after yesterday’s conversation I think this may be a yes

‘Haha! You couldn’t have planned that’

That is the way of random sometimes. My question is do you want a love interest?

‘I think so, but not as the main storyline.’

So you don’t want a role in a honey-sweet romance story then

‘Oh good grief no’

Phew! I don’t have to write it

‘And I don’t have to sit here holding my head in my hands wailing why, oh, why’

Haha! Okay, so the idea of being some god-like hero of a romance doesn’t appeal

‘Not unless I can be a dark, broody, and very horny vampire, no’

Haha! I love it

‘Only one thing bothers me’

You don’t like the idea of sucking the red juice?

‘No, I’m okay with that. But can vampires be gay?’

I don’t see why not and Nige…

‘What?’

That’s one fuck of a way to come out, mate.

‘Haha! I’ve surprised you. Well, writer, you will have to get used to it, love’

Oh, please as if I have a problem with that

‘That’s true. So you really didn’t know?’

No, but then I hadn’t actually thought about your sexuality

‘And why not?’

Seriously, Nige. You are you and as long as you are happy as you are, I don’t care who sucks your dick, but I hope they are good at it

‘Good, and likewise’

Dude!!

‘Oops, yeah, sorry.’

No worries.

‘Can I ask a question?’

Go on

‘Was that the sacrifice to be you?’

Sex?

‘Yeah’

No, that aspect of me was only meant for one person.

‘Ouch! So if a certain lady walked in the room?’

Ciao, see ya later sums it up

‘Haha! I wouldn’t hang around’

See you tomorrow, Nige

Pitch and What? (Simply 6 Minutes)

Inspired by and written for Simply 6 Minutes – thank you, Christine

Form: Heather’s Sonnet

The pitch marked out in lines
White boarders on each zone
As the new game defines
Each player stans alone

But each space is so small
They all stand on one foot
And some can’t see the goal
Even wearing a boot

This new game makes no sense
Is there a ball or puck
And the score is nonsense
A matter of dumb luck

A pitch set for a game
To play but has no name

Time: 6 minutes

Word Count: 76
