Painted galvanized steel
Dia Art Foundation, New York, USA
For ‘Norma Jean Rising,’ Chamberlain abandoned the colourful painted crumple steel to investigate the prosaic surfaces of galvanized steel. Chamberlain ordered prefabricated galvanized steel, normally used for ductwork and its standard 42x28x18 inch dimensions. He had the pieces crushed and contorted into objects that resembled his car parts sculptures and then back to his studio for refinement. ‘Norma Jean Rising’ was shown at the Sidney Janis Gallery in an exhibition called Homage to Marilyn Monroe in 1967
