Woman III

Abstract Expressionism
Oil on canvas

‘Woman III’ is part of De Kooning’s Women series of paintings shown at the Sidney Janis Gallery to much controversy and outrage within the art world. Thick swathes of energetic vertical and horizontal gestures of paint covered the surface of the canvas in hues of cream and silver. From this frantic gesturing a figure of a wide-eyed, large-breasted woman emerges. The compactness of the figure with the gestural brushwork gives the woman a sense of wound-up energy.
