‘The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon’ is the first of De Chirico’s Metaphysical Town Square series, and the first painting that demonstrated the style and imagery that he became famous for, A quiet, enigmatic scene, a strangely simplified example of an old town.

De Chirico was an artist and writer. Before the outbreak of WW1, he founded the scuola metafiscia movement that profoundly influenced the Surrealists. De Chirico is best known for paintings of Roman arcades and architecture with long shadows, mannequins, and departing trains with an illogical perspective
