Hadid’s first project in China, the Guangzhou Opera House was a result of her success in a design competition. A 1800-seat theatre, 400-seat multifunctional hall, rehearsal rooms, and an entrance hall are contained in the structure of folded glass and polished granite. Hadid likened the building to pebble in stream adding emphasis to its riverside location. Inspired by it surrounds was nevertheless innovative. As a reflection of the controversial and innovative spirit involved in its construction Puccini’s opera Turandot, a controversial work of art in China, was the opening performance.

Hadid was an architect and the first woman to receive the acclaimed Pritzker Architecture Award. She received the prestigious Stirling Prize for Architecture in 2010 and 2011. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2012 for services to architecture. Hadid is the only woman to be awarded the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects
