The Violin

The Violin
Form: Free Verse

Her strings sing of moonlight
the melancholic songs of solitude
that echo through the twilight mist
and the stars come out to hear her violin
as it caresses the darkening sky
with the resonance of the tears she cries
as her heart pours out through her bow
the silvery moon weeps at such despair
as the solitary girl plays her tune
the moon and stars listen
to music taking flight
until the birthing of the sun brings a new day
but she will sing her violin another night

At 3 metres high and 50 metres long, Odyssey stretches across four walls of a room. Cai drew inspiration from the classical Chinese paintings of idealized landscapes as a central theme. Made with gunpowder in a complex technique evolved over a number of years the imaginary landscape aims to create a reflection of the artist’s unseen world, relating to nature, the ancestors and the universe.

Cai is an artist; born in China he currently lives and works in New York City and New Jersey. Cai forged his way into international art stardom as one of the first Chinese artists to expose contemporary dialogues in Chinese art to the world. With the ground-breaking mediums of gunpowder and fireworks and spectacle into the art-marking process, his work is well-known for its ability to leverage fear and tension toward a common consideration of the beauty in destruction. His unique artistic language, in which art becomes a reckless action, has given him the role as one of our most innovative modern artists

A Smile at Dawn

A Garret Poet

Form: Pentastich

In those early hours of dawn
When sunlight barely shines
And crystal tears of dew sparkle
On tender lawns and lashes
It’s then I gaze on your smile.

The smile that beguiles my eyes
And lifts my heart from sorrow
A gentle ray of wonder
That breaks the solemn darkness
And gives my soul its hope.

You smile through my fears
While awakening the ache
The endless yearning to feel you close
Recall the gentle embrace of love
All caught in my gaze.

Name of Love

A Garret Poet

Form: Pentastich

Cast out by the clothes I wear
Shallow judgements of who I am
Because I wear jeans and not a dress
So many empty words to break my heart
Said in silence behind my back.

Why should I care what they say
When a lipstick smile is all I need
It is not me who can’t accept the truth
Yet I feel alone in a dark place
Suffocated by prejudice

You can’t understand my pain
The daggers of shame that pierced my heart
Falsehoods and frustration making it worse
Living behind barriers built of denial
With no room to breathe

I tried to change reality
Believing love belonged elsewhere
Not daring to be myself
I could not change my desire,
My love of her.
