In the Junk Drawer by Jez Farmer

It’s that time to clear out the drawer of junk
To rummage odds and sods that did a bunk
All those things that in secret try to hide
Neglected stuff aspects of me inside
Hidden away like the tears never cried
And secrets my words could never confide
Does my junk startle at the sudden light
Like my heart as dawn breaks the darkest night
Old receipts like my feelings screwed up tight
Discarded to the trash can to be right
Refusing the hand that tries to show care
I’ve no time for heartache; too much to bare
All these feelings that I just cannot share
I didn’t expect to find that in there

Haiku for Lily Dog

Form: Haiku

lost in the chasing
the hunt within blades of grass
throw the ball – again
woof! bark! danger seen
caught and cornered by the gate
and the bin trembles
shaggy dog stories
she don’t hear while munching treats
my Lily dog rocks

Nesting Birds

Form: Mathlish

The pale blue pattern announces the spring
A music box behind the blossom sings
In branches of the blooming lilac tree
The nesting birds wait as parents-to-be
They’re constantly watching hoping to see
A delicate crack announcing new life
As Mr Sparrow serenades his wife
And from the soft earth a tulip breaks through
A crimson kiss that speaks of all thins new
Whilst fresh beneath the skies of springtide blue
The poets write their dreams in pen and ink
With words of love they gently reach to touch
The tender heart that makes them yearn so much
And in that muse there's barely time to think

We’re All Australians Now by Banjo Paterson

We’re All Australians Now
1915

Australia takes her pen in hand
To write a line to you,
To let you fellows understand
How proud we are of you.

From shearing shed and cattle run,
From Broome to Hobson’s Bay,
Each native-born Australian son
Stands straighter up today.

The man who used to “hump his drum”,
On far-out Queensland runs
Is fighting side by side with some
Tasmanian farmer’s sons.

The fisher-boys dropped sail and oar
To grimly stand the test,
Along that storm-swept Turkish shore,
With miners from the west.

The old state jealousies of yore
Are dead as Pharaoh’s sow,
We’re not State children any more —
We’re all Australians now!

Our six-starred flag that used to fly
Half-shyly to the breeze,
Unknown where older nations ply
Their trade on foreign seas,

Flies out to meet the morning blue
With Vict’ry at the prow;
For that’s the flag the Sydney flew,
The wide seas know it now!

The mettle that a race can show
Is proved with shot and steel,
And now we know what nations know
And feel what nations feel.

The honoured graves beneath the crest
Of Gaba Tepe hill
May hold our bravest and our best,
But we have brave men still.

With all our petty quarrels done,
Dissensions overthrown,
We have, through what you boys have done,
A history of our own.

Our old world diff’rences are dead,
Like weeds beneath the plough,
For English, Scotch, and Irish-bred,
They’re all Australians now!

So now we’ll toast the Third Brigade
That led Australia’s van,
For never shall their glory fade
In minds Australian.

Fight on, fight on, unflinchingly,
Till right and justice reign.
Fight on, fight on, till Victory
Shall send you home again.

And with Australia’s flag shall fly
A spray of wattle-bough
To symbolise our unity —
We’re all Australians now.

20th Century Boy by T Rex

T Rex
The English rock band T. Rex was formed in 1967 by Marc Bolan, the band’s singer-songwriter and guitarist. Under their original band name of Tyrannosaurus Rex they released four psychedelic albums. From 1969 Bolan began to shift from an acoustic sound to an electric one and shortened the name to T. Rex. Bolan was killed in a car crash in 1977 shortly after the band’s final album Dandy in the Underworld. However, T. Rex has continued to exert influence on a variety of subsequent artists since then.

Lyrics by Marc Bolan

Friends say it’s fine
Friends say it’s good
Everybody says it’s just like Robin Hood

I move like a cat
Charge like a ram
Sting like a bee
Babe, I want to be your man

Well it’s plain to see
You were meant for me
Yeah, I’m your boy
Your 20th century toy

Friends say it’s fine
Friends say it’s good
Everybody says it’s just like Robin Hood

Fly like a plane
Drive like a car
Ball like a hound
Babe I want to be your man

Well it’s plain to see
You were meant for me
Yea I’m your toy
Your 20th century boy

20th century toy
I want to be your boy
20th century toy
I want to be your boy
20th century toy
I want to be your boy
20th century toy
I want to be your boy

Friends say it’s fine
Friends say it’s good
Everybody says it’s just like Robin Hood

Move like a cat
Charge like a ram
Sting like a bee
Oh, babe I want to be your man

Well it’s plain to see
You were meant for me
Yea I’m your toy
Your 20th century boy

20th century toy
I want to be your boy
20th century toy
I want to be your boy
20th century boy
I want to be your toy
20th century boy
I want to be your toy

In Petals

A beautiful poem by Laura Denise

Laura Denise

In the details of petals,
I find my story.
Reminiscent moments,
silent allegories.

That which has come to pass.
That which remains.
That which comes with faith.

Delicate fortitude,
golden center
untarnished by the rains.
