The ‘CBS Building’ was the last major project taken on by Saarinen before he died in 1961. His senior designers Kevin Roche and John Dinkeloo, whose firm succeeded Saarinen’s practice, completed the project. Saarinen’s only true skyscraper, the building is 38 storeys and is the headquarters of the CBS Corporation, however, it is not the broadcast centre for any of its media.

Saarinen took inspiration for the design of ‘The General Motors Technical Center, Warren, Michigan, USA’ from the sleek precision of GM’s vehicles. They were placed at the centre of the concept for the buildings’ interiors. Large foyers characterized by minimalist geometrics double as a showroom for top-of-the-line new vehicles. The exterior precision is mirrored by crisp glass-and-steel boxes.

The only work by Saarinen in the state of Pennsylvania, ‘Hill College House’ exemplifies his numerous designs for student housing on American university campuses. Originally constructed as a women’s dormitory the building employs a skin of rough red brick that ensconces it within the building traditions of Penn’s campus and Philadelphia.

Officially a portion of the larger Jefferson National Expansion Memorial commemorating a number of different events, including St. Louis’ status as the gateway to the West, the Gateway Arch is justifiably considered a monument in its own right due to its colossal singularity of form. Saarinen and his team titled their competition entry ‘Gateway to the West’ and the name stuck
