The ‘CBS Building’ was the last major project taken on by Saarinen before he died in 1961. His senior designers Kevin Roche and John Dinkeloo, whose firm succeeded Saarinen’s practice, completed the project. Saarinen’s only true skyscraper, the building is 38 storeys and is the headquarters of the CBS Corporation, however, it is not the broadcast centre for any of its media.

A carpet of gold and red adorns the forest floor
You always loved the autumn leaves
Kicking your way through
Making your own path
Without dismay in the autumn sunshine
But the leaves are falling
Leaving the forest trees bare
As is nature’s perfect design

I wish it could be forever autumn
So I could spend forever watching your delight
But as with the seasons the day came
When the world turned cold
But that is how it has to be
Until the spring in her full array
Welcomes life as it is reborn
And born it will be as is nature’s way
Once more the vibrant leaves will adorn the trees
With the promise of your return

Not What Was Meant by Bertolt Brecht

Bertolt Brecht 1898-1956

Not What Was Meant

When the Academy of Arts demanded freedom
Of artistic expression from narrow-minded bureaucrats
There was a howl and a clamour in its immediate vicinity
But roaring above everything
Came a deafening thunder of applause
From beyond the Sector boundary.
Freedom! it roared. Freedom for the artists!
Freedom all round! Freedom for all!
Freedom for the exploiters! Freedom for the warmongers!
Freedom for the Ruhr cartels! Freedom for Hitler’s generals!
Softly, my dear fellows…
The Judas kiss for the artists follows
Hard on the Judas kiss for the workers.
The arsonist with his bottle of petrol
Sneaks up grinning to
The Academy of Arts.
But it was not to embrace him, just
To knock the bottle out of his dirty hand that
We asked for elbow room.
Even the narrowest minds
In which peace is harboured
Are more welcome to the arts than the art lover

Who is also a lover of the art of war

Bertolt Brecht
Born: 10 February 1898, Augsburg, Germany

The evening sky is ablaze
Inviting the moon to rise on high
With her stars filling the sky
Bidding good night to the Sun King’s rays
The evening sky is ablaze

The lunar queen of the night
May kiss her king in the purple twilight
As they romance in nature’s ways
The evening sky is ablaze

And what of us, you and me
Is it the embers of the day I see
As into your eyes I gaze
The evening sky is ablaze
