Feel the Pain by The Damned

The Damned

The Damned

The Damned are a gothic punk rock band formed in London, England, in 1976 by the lead vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist Captain Sensible, and drummer Rat Scabies. They were the first English punk rock band to release a single, ‘New Rose’, an album, ‘Damned Damned Damned,’ and to tour the USA. As one of the first gothic bands, the Damned influences the goth subculture with lead singer Vanian’s vampire-styled costumery, baritone voice and dark lyrics.

Lyrics by Brian James

I know you’re cold but I’ve seen it before
I’ll take a chance on the wine
Your starched white lips intravenous she drips
In fear of turning blind
Hair to grey and some guys say
Shows you’re shows you’re growing old
Do it again I can’t explain
The light sure seems cold

Feel the pain it leaves no stain
Feel the pain the name of the game

Drop some blues time to choose
Why your heart is just a stabbing
Bloody eyes can’t describe
The nature of your hacking
Back to front the blade tastes blunt
In the safety of your bedroom
No desire to touch the fire
It’s just a just a sad obsession

Feel the pain
It leaves no stain (leaves no stain)
Feel the pain
The name of the game
Feel the pain
It leaves no stain (leaves no stain)
Feel the pain
The name of the game Feel the pain
Feel the pain
Feel the pain
Feel the pain
Feel the pain
Feel the pain

  1. Though I can’t fine tune my reasoning, I have always favoured the mostly unpopular Music For Pleasure over DamnedDamnedDamned. As a teen I found the whole P. Floyd connection with the 2nd album absolutely at odds with what (I felt) was supposed to be punk rock – but something has always intrigued me with MFP; the cover, the production (v. dark, but not murky; very strong), the tunes and I love what B. James brought to the damned party in general: he seemed also at odds. I will revisit both albums again and see what occurs. Great post.
