“The Blue Fish” confronts the viewer with a central female figure emerging from an unusual object, a fish. The scene recalls Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” whilst acquiring a new surreal and fleshy dimension. The woman rising from a fish rather than a shell is attired in a blood-coloured dress but is ethereal and bears a resemblance to Rauch’s wife, Rosa Loy. A man is holding her hand as if in guidance and steadying the woman as she emerges looks like the artist himself. Whilst the viewer is confronted with an enigma there is a sense Rauch had a clear awareness of the scenes meaning and where it comes from.

“Marina” depicts two men pulling a part human part statue crucifix figure from the sea. The events are observed with surrounding stormy skies and crashing waves. Comparable to the traditional Entombment and Pieta images of the Renaissance Rauch gives classical iconography a contemporary edge with the florescent quality of his palette and the inclusion of unusual objects.

Magic Realism
Oil on canvas

A scene populated by figures in chaotic motion, and in vibrant carnivalesque colours ‘Waiting for the Barbarians’ takes its name from a poem by Constantine P. Cavafy. There is an essence of the military influence Rauch experienced growing up in a divided Germany. The panoramic view encourages viewers to read the composition as a narrative of an unfolding drama, from one end to the other.

Magic Realism

In a gesture of sacrifice, a parochial couple appears to be offering a struggling satyr. ‘The Offering’ is set in a forest with a strange factory building nearby, in the background, another couple is wrestling with the jaws of a cauldron creature. Rauch’s intent to suggest that the images do not represent a clear narrative but a series of unconscious imaginings in nonsensical cohesion allows the viewer to feel what they see rather than over-think an understanding.

Unbearable Naturalism by Neo Rauch

Unbearable Naturalism

Magic Realism
Oil on medium-density fibreboard

An early work by Rauch, ‘Unbearable Naturalism’ contains ambiguity in action in multiple spaces illustrating the absurd and the unconscious. Split in two, the composition depicts men with easels in both spaces as well as their painting equipment and canvases. Bizarre orange bubbles float alongside the subject matter and the viewer is left to question as to whether the bubbles are symbolic of thought or moments of decorative pause.
