Rephahim Shade – 2 by Jules Olitski

Rephahim Shade – 2
1974
Abstract
Acrylic on canvas
Private Collection

To the consternation of his supporters, Olitski abandoned his spray guns and bright vibrant colours in the mid-1970s, instead turning to a monochromatic palette and gestured broad brushwork. His work remained abstract; however, its dark and earthy tones and expressive application of paint were inspired by European Old Masters such as Rembrandt and El Greco. “Rephahim” is an ancient Hebrew word for shadows or shades of the dead.

Born: 27 March 1922, Snovsk, Ukraine
Nationality: Ukrainian-American
Died: 4 February 2007, New York, USA

Olitski was a painter, sculptor, and printmaker. He was instrumental in the development of the Colour Field school. Olitski stained his canvas surfaces in a technique that rejected the gestural brushwork of the Abstract Expressionist artist of the time. Olitski’s signature works eliminated the illusion of depth and any evidence of the artist’s touch, placing the emphasis on the materials used, the surface and the emotional strength of colour

One of Olitski’s breakthroughs works during the mid-1960s. ‘Patutsky in Paradise’ demonstrates the use of high-powered spray guns to apply paint to canvas, producing seamless layers of colour that flow into one another without any evidence of the artist’s interference. Olitski’s intent was to capture the purity of colour floating in the air and defying the restrictions of the canvas and of gravity itself.

‘Cleopatra Flesh’ is a stain painting, exemplifying Olitski’s early works as a member of the Colour Field movement. The artist poured diluted paint onto a large canvas to create its bold and simple composition. The artist’s hand is evident in the careful arrangement of curved and circular shapes. Diluted polymer paint dries rapidly allowing for no changes at a later time so Olitski’s handling of his medium needed to be skilful and with purpose.

The well-received series of paintings titled ‘With Love and Disregard’ were painted in 2002 when Olitski was 78. In the series the artist had come full circle to the vivid colours and curvilinear forms of his Colour Field canvases of the 1960s.Raw and elemental with cracked surfaces and harsh contrasts Rapture was inspired by the dramatic sunsets and sunrises on the water seen from Olitski’s studio on Bear Island, New Hampshire, captured in the artist’s fearless combination of his love for his medium and his disregard for the rules of traditional art.
