Equivalent I-VIII by Carl Andre

Equivalent I-VIII
Sand-lime bricks
Different Museums and Private Collections

Andre often works in series to produce a complete exhibition of sculptures using the same materials in different arrangements. Each of the “Equivalent” series uses 120 sand-lime bricks and the eight stacks are arranged in different rectangular formations. All eight sculptures demonstrate Andre’s concepts of sculpture as place. Spread out over the floor of the gallery the artist uses the eight structures to generate a sense of horizontality. After the exhibition, each sculpture was sold individually and the emphasis was lost.
