After the Marriage
Form: Free Verse
her arms dusted with flour
shuddered with the passing years
as her fists pounded
and twisted the daily batch of dough
rolls to serve with dinner
and a loaf take shape
the kettle whistles
a cup of tea with the dough set to rise
she remembers the old days
the early days of happy ever after
just after she married her prince
when the days of domestic chores
became a memory
and they lived happily ever after
that was the traditional prediction
that didn’t see revolution
the evacuation to the small cottage
and she’s here back in the kitchen
making bread
and her price works in a factory
making the money to buy flour
and this is the real happy ever after
