Mari Lwyd

Author’s Notes: In the long dark nights of the Welsh year a mysterious white horse traditionally appears to cause menace and mischief – her name is Mari Lwyd

Form: Free Rhyme

Avoid the drunken oafs at play
Who cuss and curse before they pray
I see in them no sweet delight
As again they begin to fight
Their voices sing no joyful song
With words that have no mother tongue
Offensive to the listening ear
Their revelry will end in tears
To sup the wine and raise a glass
Then first I seek my pretty lass
Let love come into my eye
Then sip my wine and simply sigh
